Family Caregiver Tips in Fairfield, NJ – When it’s Time for Your Senior Loved One to Consider Home Care, Can You Answer Their Questions?
When Mandy realized that her father was struggling while living at home alone, there were a number of options that came to mind. Having him move in with her was one of them, but after careful consideration she knew this wasn’t going to work. She never brought up the topic to him, but she also thought about other potential options, including assisted living, nursing homes, and even hiring home care services.
She talked about certain issues with her best friend and they both came to the conclusion that he would probably prefer to hire an in-home care provider rather than look at other options. She couldn’t see him even needing a nursing home, much less agreeing to go to one even if you did. Assisted-living was certainly an option, but she didn’t know the first thing about it and figured her father would want to stay at home for as long as possible.
One day Mandy sat down to talk to her father about the issues she noticed he was having. He was reluctant to admit the struggles he was dealing with on a regular basis. He avoided eye contact and tried to gloss over some of the examples she was giving him, such as the two outside lights that had been out for more than five weeks. He was always the type of person to be a stickler for changing light bulbs, especially exterior bulbs, whenever they went out.
She finally began to work on him a bit more and he agreed that having some type of support might be beneficial. She talked about hiring an in-home care provider and he tried to dismiss that offhand, saying it was too expensive. She tried to tell him that it was affordable, that between the two of them they could hire somebody even for a few weeks, just to see how it would go.
He asked several questions about these type of services and yet Mandy couldn’t answer a single one of them. That’s because she didn’t know anything about home care services. She only knew that they were available and that other people use them from time to time.
If you are in a similar situation like Mandy and are going to talk to a family member about hiring home care services, it’s important to know the process and all of the benefits that they can offer. If they don’t know, it really is difficult to answer the questions that will inevitably come up.
