Arthritis Can Certainly Slow Down Recovery, and This Is How to Help

Reduce Hospital Readmission Rates in Fairfield NJ

Reduce Hospital Readmission RatesStruggling to recover from a hospital stay is most likely going to become more difficult as people get older. For individuals in their 70s or 80s, recovering from a sprained ankle might take several months whereas for a person in their 20s or 30s, it may only be a matter of weeks.

While few people throughout the country are focused on hospital readmission rates and how to reduce them, the main focus is all about recovery. Recovery can be complicated by many factors, including arthritis.

How arthritis can slow down recovery.

Arthritis is often characterized by inflammation of certain joints that can lead to pain and discomfort. When arthritis is flaring up, it may lead an individual to avoid any number of exercises, activities, or routines that could be instrumental in the recovery process.

When a person is dealing with arthritis and avoids certain exercises or even physical therapy, that may actually increase the risk of a hospital readmission. There are ways to help out, though.

First, consider encouraging low impact exercises.

A high impact exercise would be like jogging down the street. The constant pounding on the pavement is being absorbed by various joints in the body, including the hips, knees, and ankles.

If a person has arthritis in those joints, any type of activity like that would most likely be met with discouragement. They simply don’t want to deal with the pain, even though the exercises are absolutely essential to their recovery.
Low impact exercises are much better, and they can include water aerobics, a stationary bicycle or rowing machine, and other similar activities.

Second, friends and family may be able to help around the house.

When a person is recovering after hospital stay, especially if they are elderly, they still have a lot of things they need to get done around the house. Many of those activities could cause their arthritis to flare up.

Having family and friends stop by to help with some of those activities could alleviate a lot of physical pressure from that individual.

Third, hire home care support services.

Whenever a person is talking about recovery, especially for aging individuals, a home care aide is one of the best assets to have on hand. That’s because the more experienced a home care aide has working with other seniors in similar situations, the more insight they may be able to offer with regard to this senior’s situation.

Arthritis may derail recovery, but it doesn’t have to, at least not when people focus on exercises and activities that limit the risk of flare-up.
