Frustrations Build When You Can’t Find a Qualified Contractor for Home Safety Modifications

Safety has been one of the top concerns you have for your elderly mother at home. As a senior, she has been struggling with certain tasks around the house for some time. Maybe you’ve been the one to help her as best you can, but now you know certain home modifications need to be made.

You’re thinking about installing grab bars and a stair lift.

Senior Home Safety in Woodbridge NJ: Finding a Contractor

This is just a small part of the changes you want to make to help improve safety for your elderly mother at home. Installing grab bars and a stair lift, though, are things you know nothing about. You are not handy with carpentry or tools; you know your own limitations.

You also know that it’s highly recommended to have an experienced contractor install grab bars and do other home modifications to improve safety for seniors. However, you’ve been calling contractor after contractor and it seems as though no one is interested in taking on these jobs.

Not many of them have time for what they consider ‘small projects.’

Larger contracting companies have a tendency to focus on the bigger jobs, like kitchen renovations, additions, finishing a basement, and more. Coming out to a person’s house to install two grab bars in a tub or shower surround doesn’t seem practical for their time.

This may tempt you to do things yourself.

You certainly don’t want to hire an inexperienced contractor who isn’t going to do a better job than you could if you just studied and read a book and followed those instructions. You should only hire a licensed and experienced contractor, but if you are tempted to do things yourself because of the frustration your facing, think again.

Explain the situation clearly.

When you call these contractors, even if you have to leave a message, explain the situation. Explain the safety concerns you have and why you need this installed properly. Tell them you are running up against the wall just trying to find somebody who can do this job. Let them know you are flexible for when they would arrive to do the work; in other words, you can be there on their schedule.

You may have to make provisions with your employer or with other things to make sure you can do that, but when they understand it’s about safety and when they know you are flexible to work around their schedule, they will be more likely to call and offer their services.

Owner at Key Home Care
Sharon received a BS degree in Business Administration and began working in banking and various financial institutions before opening her first home care agency in 2002. After living through watching her mother take care of her grandmother and great aunt in her home, with the help of a caregiver, Sharon saw the need for this service. She researched all the options available to people and then decided to open her own company so she could not only provide caregivers to families but also be a resource for families in the same situation her family was in.

After 14 years in business, Sharon fully immersed herself in the senior community. She became the president of the Senior Commission in her home town of Metuchen, NJ. She is also on the Accessibility Commission in Metuchen. Sharon has been a member of the Metuchen Chamber of Commerce since 2002.

Sharon grew up in Perth Amboy, NJ with her parents, two sisters and one brother, and moved to Metuchen in 1999.

Sharon has learned a lot about the needs of seniors and their families. Everyone's situation is unique and needs to be handled individually. Sharon likes to get to know her clients by communicating with them and finding out what would make their difficult situation a little more pleasant.

In her free time, Sharon has two children that keep her busy and enjoys playing tennis whenever she can.
